2009 West Seattle CoolMom's Holiday Toy Swap'n'Sale
The West Seattle
CoolMom group does it again! The Holiday Toy Swap ‘n’ Sale that took place this
past Saturday [November 14, 2009] was another big hit. This years 2nd annual Toy Swap
‘n’ Sale had shoppers, reusable-bags-in-hand, poised and lining up at 8:30 am
with the sale doors actually not opening until 9 am! “That’s quite a line”,
stated Abby Supplizio, one of West Seattle CoolMom members. “I can remember folks lining up as
early as 8:30 am last year. Looks like a good sign”. And it was!
Shopping Greener.There were over
seventy shoppers this year and well over 500 gently used toys. To educate folks
on how to shop and give greener, two West Seattle CoolMom’s Amy
Eby and Emily Goldstein created a booth filled with information on how to shop
for reduced packaged goods, how to wrap using cloth and reusable materials and
even what retail stores are supporting greener business practices. Some
shoppers especially liked the scarf wrapped gifts that could be used not only
for wrapping but for wearing afterwards serving a dual purpose.
Bringing Community Together. The sale brought the community
together creating an event supporting our CoolMom mission, reducing our carbon footprint and decreasing waste.
Shopping locally, purchasing non-packaged toys and reusing toys and baby
gear truly reduces our carbon footprint. This is especially important during
the holiday season, when U.S. citizens produce an average of 25 percent more
trash compared with the rest of the year.
Monies raised. Local businesses and schools
helped CoolMom gather donations with collection barrels placed at their sites,
and families throughout West Seattle donated bags of toys. The sale also raised over $1700 for CoolMom and
WestSide Baby, our co-sponsor. We also donated 15 boxes of toys to WestSide
Baby.
THANK YOU. Special thanks to our wonderful WS CoolMom volunteers, local
businesses and schools including Fauntleroy Church [our new location for the sale] Community School of West Seattle, PCC, Husky Deli, Pathfinder, C&P Coffee, Gatewood Elementary, Arbor Heights Elementary, Alki Co-op Preschool and many families who donated the toys that made this possible. To our co-sponsor for the 2nd year in a row, WestSide Baby, a big thank you goes out to Nancy Woodland.
West Seattle CoolMom looks forward to our 3rd
Annual Toy Swap ‘n’ Sale next year!
