350 Seattle Center, International Day of Climate Action

350Seattle Center

On Saturday October 24, over 700 Seattleites joined together and formed the numbers three, five and zero atop the Fisher Pavilion at Seattle Center. Folks listened to speakers including Congressman Jim McDermott and City Council President Richard Conlin while forming the numbers and taking the pledge to do 3 out of 10 things to reduce their carbon footprint. At precisely 10 seconds before 3:50 PM, the crowd counted down and then cheered "No More Coal" at exactly 3:50 PM. with raised hands and great enthusiasm. All were excited to be a part of this historic event highlighting climate change that was celebrated around the world.

Didn't make the event? No problem, here are some things you can do to take action in your community: Take the pledge (child pledge) and call your Senators.  Let your Senator know “you want them to be a strong leader in passing a comprehensive science-based climate and clean energy bill NOW. And, to please work to quickly pass and improve the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act.”

Senator Cantwell: (202) 224-3441   and    Senator Murray: (202) 224-2621

*Bike to Seattle Center

Stu Hennessy of Alki Bike and Board and member of Sustainable West Seattle will be leading a bike ride over to Seattle Center at 12:30pm.  The participation goal will be to bring at least 350 spokes to the event at the Seattle Center (about 6 bikes worth) or 350 tires (you do the math!).

The ride leaves from Alki Kayak Tours at the Seacrest Marina, 1660 Harbor Ave SW, and end up at the 350.org rally against global warming at the Seattle Center Fisher Pavilion.

Ride pace will be a moderate 10-15 mph average using more interesting "alternative routes" from West Seattle to the Seattle Center. Riders will return at 4:30 pm.  Maps will be provided but it is preferred that folks ride together. Helmets and lights are required, locks recommended.
