No More CommutingTelecommuting - the zero miles, zero emissions commute
Leah Kyle is a Seattle CoolMom whose
commute is zero miles – and zero emissions – most days of the
week. Leah is a working mom who has lowered her carbon footprint by telecommuting. Best of all, she has reclaimed
the time stuck in traffic. Now that time is for her and her family. Leah also cleans the filters on her furnace
and buys fresh local produce, organic when possible, at the
West Seattle Farmer's Market.
Don't leave a mess...
Transportation, the simple act of
getting us or our products from point A to B is a major source of greenhouse gases
and pollution. The daily choices we make determine our environmental impact. We tell our kids: don't
leave a mess for someone else. The mess that is global warming is already hurting many species and people. Climate change will continue to affect our economy, our health, and much more. We need to clean up. Climate change is
one big mess we should not leave for our kids!
Moms choices make a big difference!
The good news is: Moms can make a big difference! Our transportation
choices and better energy efficiency at home can prevent further
climate change. One way is telecommuting, like Leah does.
Telecommuting is a work arrangement where an employee works from home,
the commute replaced by telecommunications links. If telecommuting
isn't an option, you can still do a lot when you are on the move.
Maintenance helps too
Maintaining our homes and our cars helps our planet by saving energy
and reducing consumption too. Cleaning the filters on your furnace may
even save you money! Clean filters keep your furnace working longer,
improve indoor air quality and help prevent allergies. Cleaning the
furnace filter is easy. Here is a website with a few tips. We
can also maintain our cars, by keeping the tires
inflated and changing the oil and air filters regularly.
Teaching our children
One of the most important things we do every day is to teach our
children. They learn a lot by our example. When we demonstrate a
sustainable lifestyle, our kids will be watching - and learning an
valuable lesson. And a big part of the longterm solution is teaching
our kids.
