Terri Glaberson, CoolMom Director is being flown out to D.C. courtesy of Climate Solutions to talk with Senators about the importance of Climate Change and how it impacts families. Terri is hoping to bring with her 350 letters (the number of carbon parts per million considered safe in the earth's atmosphere… we are already at over 385!) to personally hand to Senators to convey the importance of passing a strong Climate Bill THIS year.  The Deadline is October 20, 2009. Please write your letter today!

Key problems associated with global warming:

Scientists estimate that if the increases in greenhouse gas emissions continue unabated, the Earth's average surface temperature is expected to rise between 2.5 and 10.4 degrees F (1.4 to 5.8 degrees C) between 1990 and 2100, with most projections around 4-8 deg;F. Warming will be larger over land and two to three times larger in the polar regions.

Global warming is hurting many species, coastal areas and people. Access to water, food production, health, and the environment will be impacted. Hundreds of millions of people could suffer hunger, disease, water shortages, extreme weather events, heat waves, wildfires, and coastal flooding as the world warms.

Future warming will only make matters worse. Just how much worse depends on us and how quickly we take action to stop global warming. Effects of global warming include:

  • heat waves
  • decreased snow packs
  • disrupted water supplies
  • melting glaciers, sea ice and polar ice caps
  • rise in sea level
  • Instability in permafrost regions
  • poleward migration in infectious diseases (such as malaria)
  • increases in allergenic pollens
  • species extinction
  • and poleward and upward (elevation) shifts in ranges of natural and cultivated plant and animal species.
  • more extreme rainfall events, floods and droughts, more wildfires, more intense hurricanes and stronger storm surges in coastal areas

Solutions:

  • Put a price on carbon emissions.
  • Invest in repowering America to boost our economy and help American families.
  • Reduce our consumption of our planet's precious resources, especially fossil fuels.
  • Reduce our energy consumption by driving less.
  • Invest in healthy families, healthy communities and a healthy planet by supporting walking, biking and using mass transit and improving our land-use planning.
  • Improve the energy efficiency of our buildings: at home, at work, and in our schools.
  • Eat wisely, by feeding our families locally grown seasonal foods and reducing the amount of meat in our diets (livestock production accounts for 1/5 of human-caused greenhouse gases).
  • Educate our children and others in our communities by the power of our own example.
