Save the Planet - At the Store

Let's be honest:  the best thing for the planet is to buy less!  When you must buy, consider the following:

When you buy, buy something of good quality to last a long time.

Buy it used.  Reusing an item which already exists is often the best choice for the environment.

What is the environmental impact of the product you are buying?

Do you really need it?

Where did it come from?

How long will you use it?

Where will it go after you are done with it?

Buy locally produced goods.  Save on transportation emissions and keep money in your community.

Search out kids consignment shops for gently worn clothing or gear.

Shop at the local Farmer's Market.  Find one here: http://www.ams.usda.gov/farmersmarkets/

Buy products made of sustainable materials.

Buy good wood.  When buying wood products, check for labels that indicate the source of the timber.

Consider renting equipment you use infrequently - instead of buying more.

Buy Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood.

Forests that are well managed are more likely to store carbon effectively because more trees are left standing and carbon-storing soils are less disturbed. (Source:  Union of Concerned Scientists)

Bring reusable cloth bags to the store.

Ask your store to follow Ikea's example, and implement a small charge for plastic bags.

Buy fewer items of better quality.  Reduce clutter and use of precious resources.
