Seattle was the first of over 1000 cities to sign the "U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement" commiting Seattle to reduce global warming carbon pollution to 7 percent below 1990 levels by 2012. As the first CoolCity, Seattle leads the country in creating practical energy solutions that reduce energy waste and cut our dependence on oil. In 2008, Seattle met its carbon reduction goal, but the city will have to work hard to maintain the 7% reduction goal in 2012.

What is the 1 Ton Challenge?
If each citizen of Seattle decreased their carbon footprint by one ton, Seattle would meet it's goal of decreasing carbon emissions by 683,000 metric tons by 2012. That is roughly equivalent to 40 large container ships FILLED with containers of CO2. To help citizens do this, the city has created a user-friendly carbon calculator to help citizens calculate their current carbon emissions AND create a path to reduce carbon emissions by one ton in one year.
